Sometimes life does not seem fair. That was what all of us were thinking one afternoon when we received a phone call from a gentleman by the name of Ken. Ken called out of concern for his wife, Terry who had just days ago suddenly lost her beloved young horse, "Mr. Mom," in a tragic pipe corral accident.
"I am calling to ask if my wife can come up to the farm and be with your horses," Ken explained. "She is sometimes shy, and would never ask, but I think it would be a good thing for her to see other horses. It might help ease her pain. Would it be OK if I were to bring her up?" We assured Ken that we would certainly be here to help console his wife and that they were both welcome anytime. Vikki actually called him back to make sure he knew that we all understood. A few days later we met Ken and Terry, we shared their heartbreaking story in person, everyone cried. Terry walked around the ranch in a daze, she asked if she could brush a baby. We immediately put her with Scooter. (aka "Kiwi"), a quarter horse colt that was a ranch favorite. Scooter was a pocket pony, halter broke and people friendly, we knew he would take good care of Terry. About a months worth of visits to the ranch, Terry had bonded with Scooter. The colt that was so very special to us had found the love of his life. We were wondering when he would find his special person, and we were pleased to know that he had found Terry and Ken. Ken is the most patient husband that we have ever met. He often drives Terry to the barn and sits with her for hours while she brushes and hugs all the horses. Sometimes he sits in the car and reads the paper but he is always present and waiting on wife, Terry to make all the rounds.
"I am going to adopt Scooter," Terry wanted to make sure we knew that the little colt was no longer available to be shown to anyone else. But we here at the ranch already knew that she was in love and in our hearts we would have never offered him to anyone else. "Are you sure?" Asked husband Ken. "You realize that you could adopt two other horses here for the cost of one Scooter!" Terry insisted and told Ken that she had made arrangements to pay for him, he was going to be hers. Scooter is one fine baby, a well built, well bred quarter horse colt. We were all anxious for him to shed his baby coat and winter fuzz to reveal the final color under all the hair. Was Scooter a grulla? He has the potential, line back and tiger stripes, and mom carries the gene, it already said so on his registration application. We all waited. But the coat seemed to stay on forever. Scooter was smart, he was holding off, just in case we got that sudden cold front, he would be prepared. So it is now June and the coat is finally starting to shed. We all admire him daily, and still wonder, what the heck color is Scooter? But Mom, Terry, really does not care about his color or breeding, although she is very proud. He is her baby, he is her Scooter, her Kiwi. Both Ken and Terry are trying to decide on the final registered name for their new show pony. They are thinking of "Root Tootin' Scooter." What do you think of that? Terry is thrilled to know that Trainer Jennifer is now back at the ranch. Jennifer had helped Terry work with Mr. Mom at the ranch where she kept him. For the time being Scooter is staying here with us and we get to see Terry and Ken often on their visits. Terry still finds great joy brushing and hugging all the other horses here at the ranch. She gets attached and cries with us when they are adopted and leave for their forever homes. We are pleased to have met yet another horse loving family that is part of our extended family here at the ranch. Thank you God for helping Terry to open her heart to another horse and thank you God for helping our Scooter find the perfect home. Life may not be fair but as long as we are open there will always be another special someone to help us move forward.
