This is the story of how 2 friends and 1 small farm, gave all they had to save over 98 amazing horses.
My name is Tammy Craven, I am a lifetime horsewoman and president of Canyon Creek Farm LLC. What you are about to read changed many lives, and offers hope to change many more. in July of 2005, I read about an urgent situation involving thousands of displaced horses, in Alberta, Canada. I had been looking to breed some of my own mares, and bring new life to my farm when I stumbled upon what I would call a puppy mill for horses. I saw photographs of many of these horses. they were healthy, purebred, absolutely beautiful Mothers and Babies - all at high risk of being Butchered like cattle and sold for their meat!
I soon learned that they were PMU (Pregnant Mare
Urine) mares, foals, and stallions, from Canadian
PMU farms hired to harvest an estrogen rich urine
from pregnant mares. This byproduct is used to make
many female hormone replacement drugs for humans.
These horses were creating the second leading drug
sold in the world. Recent health studies caused a
(then) decline in the sale of these drugs. Lost
contracts with over one third of the current PMU
farms resulted in a devastating lay off between a
Major US pharmaceutical Manufacturer and it’s
employees - the horses!
The stakes were high, between 10-30,000 of these
horses were suddenly at high risk for being sold to
slaughter for human consumption to greedy over
seas markets that consider North American raised
horse meat a delicacy selling for over $35.00 per
pound (US)! So these horses were all wanted - just not by the right people!
The Alberta Canada area already lost their beef cattle to Mad Cow Disease several years prior, and with the worry of hoof and Mouth disease, horse meat was considered prime choice! Compelled to help, I bought a plane ticket, taking along my video camera and my horse loving friend, Vikki Dean. We flew to canada to assess the situation. Call it complete insanity or divine intervention, but I lost myself in a horse buying frenzy as This list of horses
I personally intended to buy, started at 17 - all from just photographs
- like Austin and his Mommy shown above.
After meeting them in person, the list grew to 34, then 48 as my friend, Vikki, a business minded professional, lost her mind, and heart as well! Suddenly with the signing of a rather large personal check, 63 BEAUTIFUL horses soon followed us home to california! And the very next year, we continued to add to the total as 35 more lives were brought to safety! Hands on we saved 98 horses and helped countless others find safety thru our connections.
Realizing that most of the horses that we saved were either babies or halter broke mares, we hired professionals to help us train them to insure their safety and compatibility when placing them in their new homes. Now 5 years into the project, we rescued horses that were suitable for the show ring, or as trail or therapy horses. but most importantly, they have become lifetime friends and safe companions for their owners and for this, we are very proud.
It is our intent to place our rescued horses in only the best of forever homes where they will never be unwanted or threatened again. And to help set an
example on the proper pairing and placement of horses to breeders, trainers and those involved in the Equine industry.
