What is PMU?

PMU stands for Pregnant Mare Urine.

Pregnant Mare Urine is used to produce Premarin, the most widely prescribed estrogen based hormone therapy replacement drug. Premarin is manufactured exclusively by Wyeth-Ayerst, a division of American Home Products, they are headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For over 40 years, Premarin was the second most popular drug (Tylenol is number one) in the United States, with an estimated nine million American women taking prescriptions to treat menopausal symptoms.

Premarin products include Prempro, Premphase, Prempac, and Premelle, these drugs are made up of conjugated estrogen obtained from the urine of pregnant mares. It comes in many forms, pills, creams, injections, patches, vaginal rings... and is used to reduce the symptoms of menopause in women or women who have had a hysterectomy. It is also prescribed to eliminate the risk of osteoporosis and reduce the chance of heart disease. It is the only estrogen replacement drug derived from animals, and today there are many synthetic estrogen and plant based estrogen alternatives. Yet still, many women, and even some doctors who prescribe this hormone replacement therapy, don't realize where Premarin comes from and how it is produced. Weyth

On an even more interesting note, Wyeth has attempted to severely undermine natural health alternatives through an FDA Citizen’s Petition to eliminate any natural health options for women, ie: any other form of estrogen replacement - specifically bioidentical hormones. As the name implies, bioidentical hormones (derived from estrogen-like plant compounds) are identical to natural hormones in the body. The chemical makeup of synthetic HRT is not identical. And if the petition is approved, that means that doctors literally would not be able to prescribe alternative therapy as an option to Wyeth's products). Many physicians and women’s groups around the nation are actively organizing to derail this attempt to limit competition at the expense of women’s health.

In 2002, a study released by the Women’s Health Initiative, linked the long-term use of Premarin to an increased risk of stroke and blood clots and linked the use of the related drug Prempro to elevated rates of heart disease and breast cancer! When the National Institute of Health advised physicians to cease prescribing the drugs, sales fell, and thousands of lawsuits were filed against the manufacturer. Wyeth Industries is not going to stop manufacturing or promoting the drug, instead as a result of the findings, Wyeth countered with a drug that decreased the amounts of estrogen or mare urine needed which directly effected the amount of farms needed to produce the drug - consequently the farms farthest away from the processing plant in Brandon Manitoba were laid off.-

Less than nine months after the massive farm layoffs, stock market reports stated that sales of the horse-urine drug were up 29% and that there was discussion in the ranching industry of Wyeth, possibly bringing on new farms!

With all the publicity surrounding the medical industry and Premarin, the link between the drug and its effects on the mares and foals is never brought into the mainstream public's eye. So, now that we were armed with this information, we began to gauge our future horse rescue needs by monitoring the drug’s sales on the stock market (NYSE:WYE)! But by this time we were also told by Wyeth and the PMU industry regulators that we were not allowed to help save the horses bred at any current PMU farms! In a 2006 press release addressed to the current farmers, Wyeth stated that, if the farmers were caught dealing with rescue or adoption groups, their contracts could be terminated. Consequently, all of our horse rescue efforts now must take place at the public auctions!

To make matters even more difficult, in late 2007 we learned of a new horse urine estrogen based drug, Aprela. The FDA had given Wyeth permission to market the new Premarin-based drug meant to treat osteoporosis and menopause. According to the Pharmaceutical Business Review, “This would open up bazedoxifenes/Premarin therapy to the whole postmenopausal market while providing a continuum of care throughout the menopausal period.” Even with the recent health scare, the market for Premarin and allied PMU-based drugs is still estimated to exceed $1.2 billion! Wyeth’s director of women’s health, Ginger Constantine, recently in an interview with Bloomberg, stated that "Aprela is a “major paradigm shift in menopause therapy, because it appears to curb hot flashes and strengthen bones without raising the risk of breast or uterine cancer." Wyeth forecasts Aprela sales of $2 billion a year, offsetting a plunge in revenue from Premarin and Prempro after studies in 2002 linked the drugs to cancer and heart attacks!

Whatever your thoughts are about Hormone Replacement therapy, good or bad, please understand that it has created an issue for any of us that love and honor horses. The only change we can attempt to make is through education and choice. BUT the most horrifying thing is that WE DID NOT KNOW! And we will still be having to learn as new premarin based drugs are being released and a new era of women are reaching menopause! All we are saying is that the public has a right to know both sides of the estrogen story!

What happens to these horses?

Through the years many stories have been told describing PMU farms. Stories ranging from the living conditions of the animals to stories about the farms carelessly producing horses as a byproduct.

Even though many of these stories may have been true in the past, the farms that we personally toured were well managed farms with quality livestock. Stories of farmers "abusing their live stock" may also be untrue because to a farmer his livestock is his livelihood. One of the main reasons for the improvements are due to recently updated regulations and guidelines with pressure instigated by animal rights groups. The reason that you will find many purebred and different breeds online as PMU horses, is due to the fact that many of the new farms that are brought on when the drug sales are up, are horse breeding farms and professional horse ranches because in order to effectively manage the size of herds required for PMU, a farmer must have breeding experience.

Programs through NAERIC (North American Equine Ranching Information Council) have added incentives for breeders and owners of many PMU horses. These farmers now represent themselves as horse breeders not just PMU farms and they try their best to sell their stock each year for profit to trainers and other ranches. But because many mares need to be pregnant to produce the estrogen hormone - the result is always many more horses, than there are homes for. Even in the best of times, there are just too many horses! Foal colts (males) and the unneeded fillies (females) -- (some found homes on the farm to replace the aging mares) along with the older or unproductive mares and stallions, are often times sold off at yearly auctions. Some to good homes, or other PMU farms looking to enhance their breeding lines.

But unfortunately the excess horses are sold to killer buyers from the meat buyer - a back up market to this industry, where they are then placed in feedlots. The feedlot is a place where horses are taken to be fattened up for slaughter. You won't find old and dying animals at these feedlots - because this industry is under strict agricultural (such as U.S.D.A.) guidelines for animals intended for human consumption and it is highly regulated. Only the best go to this catagory the questionable ones go to rendering facilities and zoos but not to dog food as we imagined! There were three slaughter houses that processed horse meat in the US (recently slaughter in the US has ceased - but please be aware that until laws are passed - it is not officially illegal to slaughter horses or transport horses into Canada or Mexico for slaughter. All current slaughter plants are foreign owned companies that ship the horse meat for human consumption to Europe and Japan.

Every day in America alone at least 1,000 horses are shipped to Canada or Mexico for processing. This meat is butchered into the same cuts as beef. Most Americans are probably not aware that it is considered a delicacy over seas and sells to consumers for as much as $35.00 (US) per pound. The recent scare of Mad Cow Disease has made horse meat even more appealing. Horse meat is said to be more tender and has a sweeter taste than beef. It is low in fat as well as cholesterol and high in protein and for this it is in high demand.

Opening our eyes even wider! The Story of Ferdinand.

Many race horse owners and breeders recently became aware of the demand for horse meat on the table, when the great racing Stallion, Ferdinand, winner of the 1986 Kentucky Derby, and Horse of the Year in 1987, was slaughtered in Japan and ended up as someone's dinner! No one will admit to knowing exactly where the remains of Ferdinand ended up, but the story made news during the running of the 2004 Breeder's Cup in The Lone Star State of Texas, and opened up the eyes to many race horse owners and fans here in America. Incidentally Texas was home to two of the three slaughter plants in operation in the U.S..

It takes one famous horse to bring our attention to this horrible occurrence that is happening daily! Ferninand or not, every day a horse named "Star" or "Jet" or "Lucky" faces the same demise. They could be stolen horses or a horse sold to a friend of a friend... auction horses are especially ar risk! There is big money in horse meat and no horse is safe! Please do not believe the stories of people turing their horses loose because there is no one to take them - the doors to the slaughter horse are always open and they pay for horses.

We love our horses in this country, they are companion animals as are our dogs, cats and birds... Most animals lovers in the United States as well as many Canadian's are repulsed at the idea of eating a horse. Lets all join forces to stop this cruelty. Take a stand and eliminate the useless slaughtering of horses in North America for sales in foreign countries. By reading this you now know that you can act upon it - please just take an extra moment to sign the petition! Let's not allow our horses to become a burden to society - take care of what we have - stop senseless breeding and be aware that our actions have consequences.

What can you do?

You can purchase one of these animals and give it a loving home. You can assist us in the purchase to save a horse with a tax deductible donation. You can sponsor a horse with your generous tax deductible donation and help provide the feed and care and training for it until it is placed. You can assist us in securing homes by forwarding this website to as many people as you know.

And last but not least, you can do what I did and write your congressperson to let him/her know that you are opposed to the slaughtering and transport of North American horses. Let's make our voices heard! I wrote my congressman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon regarding my stand on horse slaughter. The letter below was his response. :) It only took 10 minutes out of my day.
